The Latest Music News - New Studio Singles and Studio Albums from: David Hasselhoff, Brandon Flowers, Villagers ,Snoop Dogg , Roisin Murphy and Mariah Carey.

True Survivor is the latest brand new single from David Hasselhoff. The song is the lead track from the forthcoming 2015 Swedish short film King Fury.
King Fury is an upcoming Swedish martial arts comedy short film written, directed by and starring David Sandberg. The film is an homage to 1980's martial arts and police action films. The film was crowdfunded through Kickstarter with pledges reaching US$ 630,019 but failing short of the feature film goal of US$1 million. It has been selected to screen in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

The song was composed by Mitch Murder (Johan Bengtsson) and was recorded in Sweden. the song and music video for True Survivor is made designed as an ostentatious over-the-top 1980's homage/parody, with the video featuring dinosaurs, Adolf Hitler, skateboarding, Norse Gods and time travelling. Hasselhoff claimed that he had received the offer to record the song and the video by a request from Sweden Universal to 'sing a tribute to the 80's'.

There are many popular music artists out there who, when they are paying an homage to 1980's music in their artistic music creativity will only (really) use a quarter percentage of that 1980's music expression in their songs. Artists have not (FULLY-AS YET) been truly able to capture what the 1980's was about in music expression. This was NOT just an era that was just about the expression of the electronic keyboard (synthesizer) and drum machine, it was also an era of new studio recording techniques. Most importantly in Pop and Rock music (on both sides of the Atlantic), the era was about this 'OVER-THE-TOP' music expression. It is this 'OVER-THE-TOP' music expression (even at the most tames of music expression) that is at the heart of mostly all 1980's music. This 'OVER-THE-TOP-NESS) is either there in the main vocals, music instrumentation or both; but it is very much there in the music.

The incredible thing about David Hasselhoff''s True Survivor track is that they have gone for a FULL-ON 1980's track, as if they were still living in the era of the 1980's. Every musical facet of what gave the 1980's music of Pop and Rock its unique distinctive charm, is to be found in the True Survivor track. I mean the use of the Tom-Tom part in this track is a real revelation, because up to this point, I have not heard from ANY artist in the 21st Century, the use of the tom-tom played and recorded correctly in a (present-day) music track, in the same way that artists used to play and record the tom-tom on music tracks in the 1980's. It is not just the musicality of the 1980's on this track that is so very distinctive and appealing, but also the recording techniques of the era that are evident on this track.

Taking these things on board on this track to keep, in-check the era of the 1980's on this track when we have so much more advanced music technology in the recording studio, is an incredible achievement to everyone who was involved in the creation of this track.

Even more stunning is that the music video to this track is paying a 100% homage to the visual iconography of this era.

Below you can see the music video for True Survivor  and  also a short video documentary where David Hasselhoff describes the inspirations behind the True Survivor track and music video.

Darling Arithmetic is the third studio album from Mercury prize nominated Irish indie folk band Villagers, released on April 10th 2015 via Domino Records. The album reached number one in the Irish album charts in its first week of release.

The album was written, recorded, produced and mixed by songwriter Conor O'Brian at his home in Malahide, Dublin as a follow-up to Villagers' Mercury Prize nominated sophomore album Awayland (2013).

The first song taken from the album Courage  was released on April 10th via Domino Records and reached number one on its first week of release in O'Brien's native Ireland.

The album was received positively by music critics and currently holds a score of 76 on review aggregator website Metacritic. The album was cited by some reviewers as a departure from the sound of Villagers previous albums with Pitchfork Media remarking 'Darling Arithmetic, by contrast, is a radically subdued affair-nine mostly acoustic-based tracks that O'Brien recorded at home alone, playing every instrument and mixing the record on his own.'  Music critic with The New York Times, Nate Chinen also remarked on the change in sound stating 'For the third Villagers album, 'Darling Arithmetic,' Mr O'Brien has scaled back radically, turning out something that resembles an old-fashioned folk-rock confessional.'

Darling Arithmetic was also heralded  in O'Brien's home country of Ireland with Tony Clayton-Lea of the Irish Times remarking that the album 'proves that O'Brien-stripped back and wilfully solo-is just as  potent and pure.' The L.P. was also made 'Album of  the Week' on  Nialler9 who said 'Darling Arithmetic is the opposite of the Villagers' second album 'Awayland' (2013). Where that album had Conor O'Brien adorning his powerful songwriting with increased sonics and a process which included not just O'Brien but the long-standing members of his band.'  While music critic Stephen White of the Last Mixed Tape called it 'a deeply personal record that connects in a real and unmistakable way'.

Not all reviews of the album were positive however, music reviewer Kate Hutchinson of  the Guardian stated the record 'never manages  to be magical' and 'never quite matches those artists' emotional potency'.

Hairless Toys is the third solo album by Irish recording artist Roisin Murphy, released on 5th May 2015 by Play It Again Sam. It is Murphy's first new studio album since Overpowered  in 2007.

The announcement  was accompanied by a stream of the first track, Gone Fishing, which Murphy confirmed was inspired by the 1990 documentary film Paris Is Burning. A four-minute edit of Exploitation was later issued as the first single, with a music video directed by Murphy herself, released on April 13th 2015. Murphy commented that the song is about 'selling out, manipulation and exploitation within creative work and in a relationship.' Murphy later explained that the song 'came from being a bit wry, a bit ironic. it's got  bit of a twinkle in its eye. It's not to be taken too seriously.'

Hairless Toys has received general acclaim from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted mean rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has received an average score of 83 based on 6 reviews, which indicates 'universal acclaim'. Writing for The Irish Times, Jim roll gave the album 4 out of 5 stars and said the eight-year gap between albums for Murphy 'has not lessened her knack for beautifully finessed tunes pulled together with sublime electro pop belts and braces'. Carroll further said lead single Exploitation, 'a track where the groove is simple and sparse, works with considerable panache.'

Harriet Gibsone of  The Guardian rated the album 4 out of 5 stars and wrote that Murphy embraces the dichotomy of disco and 'intoxicating darkness {...} on intimate late-night tales, both personal and in an imagined voice of the 1980's LGBT community of New York's ball scene.' Gibsone furtherer stated that 'Gone Fishing' contains 'Italo-disco and house mutations and unusual country diversions, concluding that Hairless Toys is 'pure, evocative elegance'. Reviewing the album for Toronto newspaper Now, Kevin Ritchie gave the album 4 out of 5 and named it the album of the week, judging that  it  'fuses delicate, slow-burning deep-house-type rhythms with pop twang and the odd bit of glittering glam.
