Sing is a song by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It features production and additional vocals from Pharrell Williams. The song was released as a digital download on 7th April 2014, serving as the lead single for his upcoming second studio album, X. The new studio album has an official release date of June 23rd 2014.
The track which has pop and r+b influences was apparently inspired by singer Justin Timberlake, is a considered a departure from Sheeran's folk-rock sound he became known for on his debut album +. Sheeran was inspired to model the song after the pop and r+b styling's of Timberlake, stating 'It was pretty close to a direct inspiration. I love 'Justified and FutureSex/LoveSounds',so I took inspiration from those.'. The lyrics are about 'a night out in Vegas'.
Sing was released in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and Germany in May 2014, with a corresponding EP. Aside from these nations, Sing was released internationally on April 7th 2014, during a YouTube live chat with Sheeran.
The music video for Sing was released exclusively to Sheeran's Facebook page on May 22nd 2014 and added to Vevo and YouTube on May 23rd, exactly a month before the album was released. It follows a puppet caricature of Sheeran on a night out during which he gets drunk, sings karaoke, goes to a strip club and picks up Sheeran and the song's producer Pharrell Williams from a studio in his truck. Sheeran has stated that he owns the puppet in the video, but has 'no idea how to work it yet'.
The song achieved widespread critical acclaim upon release, with music critics complimenting Sheeran's change of sound, and likening the song to the works of Justin Timberlake. Time gave the song a very positive review, saying that is 'more of a departure. It fits the times nicely: there's some of fellow Brit Sam Smith in Sheeran's rubbery falsetto, plus some of Robin Thicke's ubiquitous 'Blurred Lines' in the percussion, but Sheeran's really got his heavy-breathing, hyper-flirtatious sights on another, older target: Justin Timberlake's solo debut 'Like I Love You'., adding that: 'Countless artists have died on that hill, from former boy banders trying to reinvent themselves in Timberlake's image, to teen idols in protected growth spurts, to Timberlake himself on parts of The 20/20 Experience, but Sheeran brings legit musicianship, not just branding to the tune and his vocal tics and the 'Billie Jean' percussion suggest he might be looking back even further, to Michael Jackson imperial phase.
On the week of April 14th 2014, the song entered the New Zealand Singles Chart at number 8, becoming his fourth top 10 single and second top 10 debut in New Zealand.
Sing debuted at number fifthteen on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Sheeran his highest charting single in the United States. The single managed to sell 123,000 copies, giving him his second best sales week digitally; the song also managed to net 563,000 streams and earn 28 million in audience impressions, all before its debut on the Billboard Hot 100. Sing has since peaked at number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100.
Sing also debuted at number one on the Australian ARIA Charts in May 2014, making it Sheeran's first number one in the country, and his sixth top ten single in Australia.
This track bodes very well for Ed Sheeran's forthcoming new album X , which has an official release date of June 23rd 2014.
I also love the fact that Ed Sheeran is not just sticking with old formulas and playing with the same genres he visually works in as a musician, but is completely thinking out of the box and going into music genres that naturally would be the polar opposite, of the way you would usually work in as an artist in this particular music genre.
The pairing of Sheeran with Pharrell Williams is a stroke of pure genius. I also love the fact that the music video for Sing is going against the grain of how Ed Sheeran is visually shown in music video. The Sing music video is also taking artistic chances and this is visually showcasing Ed Sheeran as a REAL Artistic, 21st-Century, Contemporary Singer/Musician.

There was a period of time (even as far back as 5 years ago) where you could have said that the Pop Music coming out of the United States was far superior than the Pop Music that is released from the United Kingdom. I don't believe today, you can make that same statement anymore.
The Pop Music today that is released from the United Kingdom is the equal of Pop Music that is released from the United States. As in their previous single Move (officially released in November 2013), Little Mix status as a world-wide pop act are perfectly displayed on this single. Every single facet of this new single by Little Mix (I mean in the WHOLE creativity of pop single and music video) is the equal of an American pop single release.
I said before (of their debut single 'Move' and I'll say it again), Little Mix are the equivalent of a British version of En Vogue, in terms of how their vocals blend together very uniquely.
The United Kingdom should be very proud of itself in what kind of pop act (like Little Mix), they are releasing for the world.
